When worlds collide, what is the appropriate cocktail?

Don’t panic — there is no meteor or other planetary body hurtling toward Earth. We’re talking about the back-to-back mash-up of the 98th annual Academy Awards falling on Sunday and Tuesday’s green mark, St. Patrick’s Day.

The whiskey sour — that wonderful, put-from-your-pantry, super easy, three, sometimes four, ingredient drink is a good place to land. While typically made with bourbon or rye, an easy-going glug of Irish whiskey as a swap-in makes all the sense of Eire, with its generally soft profile (and, by and large, affordability paired with good quality standards).

The caramel-deep golden hue of Irish whiskey also is a nice nod to that trophy of all trophies, the Oscar. And with a crowning cap of frothy egg white, perhaps symbolizing the crême de la crême of the film world, this version of the Whiskey Sour from our friends over at Teeling Small Bath Irish Whiskey is the happiest of happy (sipping) mediums.

Hit up Bridgehampton Wine Cellar, Cork and Jug, Riverhead Liquor Mart, Michael’s Wines and Liquors, and Long Island Fine Wines and Liquors for a bottle of Teeling, tune your TV (wait, does anyone say that anymore?) to the Academy Awards on Sunday, Mar. 15 at 7 p.m., tip a hat to old St. Pat while you’re at it and you’ll be good as golden.

  • 1 egg white
  • 2 oz Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (see recipe below)

Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup water

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Golden Sour

  • Add the egg white into a cocktail shaker. Dry shake (aka, without ice) for 20 seconds, or until egg white is emulsified and frothy.

  • Strain into an ice-filled double rocks glass. Toast to the cinematic winners and getting rid of snakes, wherever they lie in wait.
