You can’t keep a good cause down — especially when the waves are up.
This Saturday, August 9 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Crow’s Next in Montauk is the annual Surfrider Foundation’s One Ocean Gala, aimed at raising money for the not-for-profit’s work protecting the health of our oceans, beaches and coastal environment (so we can keep enjoying it for the foreseeable future).
“At a moment when federal protections for our ocean[s] are being dismantled, and science itself is under attack, our community of supporters is more important than ever,” says Surfrider Foundation CEO Dr. Chad Nelsen. “Events like One Ocean bring together the people and the resources that enable Surfrider to keep fighting at every level, from Montauk’s beaches to the halls of Congress. This community’s support is what makes that fight possible.”
This year, several celebs are adding their star appeal to help the organization — made up of scientists, environmentalists and legal experts who donate their time to the cause — bolster its efforts to beat last year’s half-million purse raised. Lending their fame to further the cause are Cynthia Rowley, Liev and Taylor Schreiber and John Slattery and Talia Balsam, along with Steven Dubb, Selby Drummond, Christina and Howard Blaustein, Shelby Meade, Carolyn Murphy, and Rachelle and Sean MacPhearson, who are all part of this year’s host committee. The event will also be honoring pro big wave surfer Greg Long, for his advocacy in both protecting our waters and for the sport of surfing.

Usually pulling together about 400 or so attendees, the annual gala’s mission is to keep funds heading toward Surfrider’s Eastern Long Island Blue Water Task Force, which monitors beach water testing, efforts to decrease creature-killing plastics in our waters through campaigns like “Skip the Stuff” in East Hampton, as well as year-round beach clean-ups and dune grass restoration.
Individual tickets for the music hour, featuring a DJ set by Diplo, are still available for a pretty reasonable $250. Get yours here and help keep our oceans and shorelines healthy (and surf-able).
