House proud

This uniquely custom home was built in 1981 in the Arts and Crafts style, customized and hand crafted by the current owners, who applied their skills in the building and design trades to give this home artisanal touches throughout.

“There’s a true sense of artwork inside and out,” says Jack Pearson, the Compass agent representing the listing, calling out details such as etchings in the shingles, specialized wood, stonework and parquet-style floors.

The house has been significantly rebuilt and refashioned over the years with the more recent work done around 2004, but Pearson says, “because of the Arts and Crafts style, it’s timeless and you don’t really see anything evidence of an era that dates it.”

What’s the plan?

Surrounded by custom stone patios, the home is entered through a covered patio and into a gracious 500-squre-foot foyer with a stone fireplace, formerly the great room in an earlier rendition of the house. The newer great room, 1,004 square feet—is to the left of the foyer and features a vaulted wood ceiling, exposed beams and a stone fireplace. The 383-square-foot dining room, leading to the kitchen, to the right. Adjacent to the kitchen are a bar, media den, breakfast area, office and utility areas. Beyond the kitchen area and through a gallery hallway, partially lined with built-in bookcases, is a 600-square-foot primary bedroom suite with a fireplace, two dressing rooms, a powder room, two large walk-in closets and two separate bathrooms joined by a common shower. A breezeway from the dining room leads to a two-story wing with ground-level ensuite bedroom and access to the garage.

There are second floors on both the main house and the wing. Two ensuite bedrooms occupy the second level of the main house and the upper-level wing, with nine-foot-high ceilings, houses additional guest quarters with two bedrooms and bathrooms, a sitting area and a kitchenette. The full basement is partially finished.

What’s cooking?

Cabinets and wood finishes on the walls are custom colored to match in the 213-square-foot kitchen, which is equipped with Wolf, Bus-Zero and Miele appliances, including two dishwashers, and a white ceramic-tile counter. The upper cabinets are glass-paned in keeping with the craft style of the home. There is a pantry and a powder room off the kitchen, as well as laundry and other flexible closet/storage space.

What else?

The house is chock-full of unique details, from the hand-painted murals on the breezeway and dining room, to the selection of wood styles and trims—pumpkin pine and white birch used in wainscoting, tongue and groove and parquet styles. The iron chandeliers, sconces and other light fixtures were hand-forged by Chicken Coop Forge in upstate New York. Other details, including the clock case, custom furniture and cabinets were done by New York craftsmen.

Amenities and more

  • 45′ x 18′ salt-water gunite pool with spa
  • Three wood-burning fireplaces
  • Guest quarters above the garage
  • Outdoor fireplace

One cool thing

There are too many cool things to call out just one, but the custom wet bar with a copper sink and countertops, wainscoting walls and parquet patterns, is a standout feature, recalling the handcraft of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Agent’s callout

“This what we call in real estate a flag lot,” says Pearson, referring to the flagpole-shaped formation of the property—a parcel often developed away from the main road and via a pole-shaped entry to a rectangular lot, offers privacy.  “You have a long driveway, so it’s super private and other houses are not really visible. You feel like you’re in the middle of a beautiful park but close a village.”

Location, location, location

The home is less than five miles from East Hampton Village and about three miles from Sag Harbor Village. Also about three miles away is the Linda Gronlund Memorial Nature Preserve, which is open year-round; two miles away is Northwest Harbor County Park. A buyer can also stick closer to home: through the pine trees at the back of the home is Two Holes of Water Park.
