House proud
This vintage home built in 1890 received a significant renovation that opened up the living space for contemporary living and installed significant upgrades — from a chef’s kitchen to a generous backyard with an outdoor kitchen to a rooftop deck with a surprise.
“There’s a lot of history in this building,” says Taleb Adla, the Douglas Elliman agent who is co-listing the property with Nikola (Niko) Cejic. “The renovation opened it up for contemporary living and gave it Sag Harbor chic but kept the heritage.”
What’s the plan?
The renovation kept it simple on the first level. The home is entered through a pillared covered porch into a light-filled foyer. To the left is a primary bedroom and a full bathroom with dual access, and the hallway leads to a 587-square-foot open-format great room and kitchen at the back of the house. Ray Romano (not the comedian/actor, but a New York City-based contractor who does have a few television appearances to his credit) created a wall of glass-paned French and folding doors overlooking the back yard with privacy hedges and a swimming pool. The second floor is dedicated to two bedrooms, a full bathroom with hallway access and a 27 x 24.6 roof deck. A spiral staircase leads from the roof to the patio area in the back yard. The walk-out basement is unfinished.
What’s cooking?
Though on the ground floor, the eat-in kitchen has a loft-like feel to it, thanks to the old-school triangular skylights and other industrial-vibe touches such as the commercial-grade stainless steel island set on casters. It offers seating for two and two open shelves of storage. Appliances include a Sub-Zero fridge and Wolf range. The kitchen is finished with subway tiles, marble counters, which also top the rolling island, and a porcelain farm sink.
What else?
The bathrooms have been renovated in classic style with subway tiles, wainscoting and retro-styled fixtures. One has a pedestal sink and the other has an industrial-chic basin sink. The bedrooms feature either painted wood beams or vaulted ceilings. Other period details include the polished-wood banister, the original six-inch plank floors and ceiling beams throughout.
Amenities and more
- 22 x 13 heated gunite pool
- Outdoor shower
- Firepit area
- Outdoor kitchen
One cool thing (or two)
The roof top features not only places for lounging and conversation, but (OK, spoiler alert!) a chipping green for golfers about half the length of the roof deck. Does not come with a ball fetcher, should you chip off the rooftop — but your friends and family can take turns.
Agent’s callout
“This is for someone who appreciates the history of Sag Harbor Village and its charm, but wants easy access to the beach and village,” says Cejic. He also noted the home’s “very strong rental history with repeating tenants.”
Location, location, location
The home is .7 miles from the center of the village, which is a shopping and dining hub. It’s also the site of the historic Old Whalers Church of Sag, which hosts numerous community events and musical performances including the annual blessing of the pets, held this Sunday at 11:30 a.m., on the front lawn. The Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum is packed with exhibitions and events celebrating the town’s historic maritime history. Haven’s Beach is .5 miles from 39 Hamilton. The Sag Harbor Yacht Club, founded in 1899, has been a village landmark on Bay Street since 1914, and the Sag Harbor Cove Yacht Club, on West Water Street. Founded in 1991, Bay Street Theater features a full schedule of performing arts and events, theater classes and camp and offers sensory-friendly performances.
