Ah, autumn! Back to school! Books and backpacks! And, perhaps, time to trade in those paperback beach reads from some sturdy new hardcovers.

Lucky you, our latest installment of “Feed Your Read” is an A+, thanks to Finley Shaw, owner of Finley’s Fiction (8 Grand Ave., Shelter Island, 203-650-7616) — whose tiny Shelter Island-based store punches well above the weight of its petite quarters with tons of terrific books to devour. Shaw opened in 2018 in the annex buildings of the Chequit just up the street, and moved to her current corner spot on Grand and Chase avenues a few years ago where she packs every square inch with great gifty offerings (some even locally made) and, of course, a bevy of books for a multitude of tastes and interests.

Here’s what’s on Shaw’s hit list for September …

The Life Impossible by Matt Haig (Penguin-Random House, release date Sept. 3)

The Life Impossible by Matt Haig

“Haig, who wrote The Midnight Library, is finally back with a new novel filled with wonder and hope and the life-changing power of a new beginning. I absolutely loved The Midnight Library which was a love letter to hope: ‘What looks like magic is simply a part of life we don’t understand yet.'”

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty (Penguin-Random House, release date Sept. 10)

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty

“Moriarty is another one of my favorite authors! The novel unfolds as a group of people flying on a plane in Australia and a psychic boards the plane and begins to predict the time and cause of death for each passenger. No one takes her seriously until one by one her predictions come true.”

Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout. (Penguin-Random House, release dates Sept. 10)

Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout

“Elizabeth Strout is one of my hands-down favorite authors. She is a beautiful writer and I’m so excited to read her newest Lucy Barton/Olive Kitteridge books. As always, the book takes place in Maine.”

The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave (Simon & Schuster, release date Sept. 17)

The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave

“Laura Dave’s highly anticipated new mystery is also a family drama. I loved her previous book, The Last Thing He Told Me (also a great TV series on Apple TV).”

Entitlement by Rumaan Alam (Penguin-Random House, release date Sept. 17)

Entitlement by Rumaan Alam

“This unsettling novel is for the new gilded age, and questions about need and worth, race and privilege, philanthropy and generosity, passion and obsession. It has been described as a provocative novel about the American imagination.”
