House proud

This classic cottage was built in the mid-1800s by John Bramble, who custom-created a home that has stood the test of time. The home’s owners describe him as “a carpenter and a son of the Revolution, who later passed [the house] down to his son, a whaler, and his wife, a niece of President Franklin Pierce.” Most ingeniously, Bramble re-purposed a former butcher shop that had closed, moved it to the site and attached it to the home as a wing that would become the kitchen.

“Bramble was a prominent businessman in Sag Harbor Village, and this was the first house built in Redwood, so it’s the oldest, and is the gateway to the Redwood peninsula,” says Jack Pearson, the Compass agent representing the listing with. Of the kitchen and the chicken coop—now an accessory building—he says, “They didn’t want to waste buildings so they figured out how to move then and reuse them.”

What’s the plan?

The ground floor includes the living and dining rooms, the 265-square-foot kitchen, a full bath and a bedroom. The living room features the original corner fireplace and an antique leaded window salvaged from a church. The second floor is dedicated to two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The back patio accessed from the 215-square-foot living room has a pergola with climbing flowering vines, “a super-charming way to have some dappled shade and sun, a view of green everywhere,” says Pearson, adding that the property backing up to a marina unlikely to be developed and offering a “gorgeous greenscape everywhere you look.”

What’s cooking?

The footprint of the double-height kitchen echoes the original butcher shop and is light filled, features the original wide-plank floors and wooden ceiling beams. A Bertazzoni stove plays a starring role, while a wood-burning stove on a brick hearth anchors the room, adding to the rustic charm.

What else?

The home was renovated and updated in 2018 by the founders of the Ash design firm, recognized by Architectural Digest. The former chicken coop is now fully reimagined as a studio/office with a kitchenette and full bathroom. It has its own patio and is privatized from the main house, and can be converted into a legal apartment.

Amenities and more

  • Heated swimming pool
  • English-style gardens
  • Accessory building
  • Mature gardens with winding paths, pergolas and gates

One cool thing

The gunite swimming pool was especially designed above ground with bluestone coping to look more like an reflecting pool, in keeping with the English garden vibe featuring roses, Helleborus, and climbing vines

Agent’s callout

“Sag Harbor is good about protecting its history, but there are so few authentic cottages left anywhere,” says Pearson. “This one is special, still in its authentic state, and they kept the spirit with the leaded-glass window and original fireplace, and other special elements.”
