From June 18-21 Southampton will host the U.S. Open Tournament at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, an event that brings more than 150,000 visitors to town. The town of Southampton has eased its rental minimum from 14 days to three nights June 8-24 to accommodate visitors and those who wish to rent their homes for the short term for the historic golfing event. For homeowners, that can be a profitable endeavor: prime locations during Open Week can command as much as the cost for a full month. For attendees, finding a rental is a competitive sport in itself.  

“The U.S. Open arriving during peak Hamptons rental season has created strong interest and plenty of conversation in the market,” says Adam Hofer of Douglas Elliman, noting that the tournament overlapping directly with “one of the busiest and most competitive times of year in the Hamptons.” This year, he says, many event attendees appear to be opting for shorter stays rather than the full week, which means competition for those coveted mini-vacations is more fierce.

If you’re attending and your needs extend beyond the four walls of a hotel room—or even throughout the month of June—here are a few places to consider, in and near Southampton:

Shelter Island Bungalow

A three-bedroom- two-bath vintage bungalow with Craftsman vibes is full of charm and authentic details. Cedar shingles, screened in front porch and original wood finishes offer up all the fixings for a nostalgic vacation. Bunkbeds in one of the rooms are ready for the kids. Southampton Estate

Spend a few days and a chunk of change for this six-bedroom, classic cottage four miles from the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, three miles from Coopers Beach and in close proximity to the village.  Amenities include a screened-in porch, first-floor primary suites and a 48 x 16 heated swimming pool set in a resort-style landscaped yard with outdoor dining. $50,000 for Open week; contact agent for details. 

St. Andrews Condo

If you want to keep it simple, check out this sunny two-story condo with two primary bedrooms and a twin trundle for the kids. Located in an condo community that includes a community swimming pool, new tennis and pickleball courts and easy amble to Shinnecock Hills. Dining on the covered desk in the back. $12,500 for Open week.

Stylish in Sag Harbor

A four-bedroom design-centric rental on .7 acres offers proximity to the golfing action and the added bonus of village lifestyle. The outdoor dining terrace seats 12, there are a couple of family/media rooms and a large sleek chef’s kitchen for entertaining. Shinnecock retreat

A 50-foot heated pool and saltwater hot tub, outdoor shower and a dining deck are among the amenities in this bright and spacious three-bedroom, two bath home with a large, leafy back yard. A step away from the hustle and bustle, it’s 1.78 miles to the golf club, 3.4 miles from Coopers Beach, and 3.5 from Southampton Village. Eight nights: $24,000.

A Village Classic

Stay awhile in ”Terry Cottage,” a six-bedroom, 6.5-bath classic in the heart of Southampton Village. It boasts architectural heritage, but also modern conveniences such as media room, gym, open format that’s friend for entertaining, and in in-ground heated pool with spa.
