Bartender Deborah Lee is known for her movie-centric cocktail naming (and excellent drinks) at the Green Room. (Photo credit: Doug Young)

There are a lot of things we love about the Sag Harbor Cinema, starting with the fact that it’s the most beautiful, iconic building on the whaling village’s main drag, it’s neon lights so picture perfect and welcoming. Which is, of course, the vibe of the place entirely, from the time you walk in and give you e-ticket to the moment you settle into a chair, popcorn in hand.

But if you’re smart, you’ll show up early enough to sidle up to a stool to visit the doyenne of drinks, Deborah Lee, at the Green Room on the top floor, the theater’s in-house and very awesome cocktail bar.

Lee, a native of Northern Ireland, has a pretty wicked sense of humor, and often likes to play around with celebrations of cinematic greatness when it comes to naming her drinks. They change with her inspiration, sometimes going off and coming back onto the menu depending on what’s showing at the time. One of our faves has long been this mezcal melange of smoke and spice. The nod to the classic comedy team of Laurel and Hardy, using the famed line that Oliver Hardy would spew at John Laurel when their shenanigans got out of hand.

It’s currently on menu-hiatus, but if you ask Lee nicely, she may well mix one up for you next time you visit. And if you’re staying in this weekend, you can get into a fine mezcal of your own.
