Whether you are passionate about antiques or never realized how fascinating and diverse antiquing could be, a visit to Good Ground Antique Center in Hampton Bays should be atop your to-do list this summer. With an extensive collection of treasures from the past — everything from mid-century furnishings to nostalgic memorabilia, there’s a good chance you’ll find several pieces that will grab your attention.

The building has been in the same family since 1912. It used to be owner Karen Andrews’ grandfather’s butcher market before becoming Davie’s Used Furniture and Antiques.

“My mother would go to auctions with my father and they were buying vanloads of furniture and then started getting antiques,” Andrews said. “We have been in business over 50 years.”

Today, Good Ground Antiques is a co-op business, with several dealers contributing to the inventory. The dealers have either been collectors all of their lives or have been in the business for years.

“Everyone has their different tastes. I mainly buy locally from people selling homes, and from estate sales,” Andrews said. “Every so often, I go traveling and antiquing. In the summer I go up to Maine.”

The antique collection at the shop is all-encompassing. Inside the main building, you will find everything from the intriguing to the sublime, including chandeliers, flatware collections, jewelry, fine china, kitchenware, artwork, and so much more. In the back, there is a four-car garage filled with larger furniture pieces and gardening equipment outside.

“Styles change over the years and therefore buying habits change,” Andrews said. “Right now, mid-century modern is popular, whereas Victorian and dark wood is out. Ten to 15 years ago, shabby chic and chipped paint might have been the thing. Vinyl records are really big right now, especially for the younger crowd, which we are trying to draw in.”

There is a wish list book for those looking for specific items. There is a collector for everything, according to Andrews, from electric fans and lighters to pocketknives and Pyrex. Customers come from all parts of the U.S. and the world, including Japan, Australia, China and European countries. The holidays are particularly very popular.

“This past Easter we sold a lot of vintage Easter pieces, and we decorate the store for the December holidays with a variety of festive antiques available for sale,” Andrews said.

Good Ground Antique Center is on West Montauk Highway, just across from Chase Bank and within walking distance to several restaurants and shopping centers. This summer, Good Ground Antiques will host an outdoor flea market in the back of the store on Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21; weather permitting.

Good Ground Antique Center, located at 52 W Montauk Hwy, Hampton Bays, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on the weekends from 11 p.m. to 5 p.m.
