It took a few years, but people are definitely going back to the movies.
Streaming services are great and all, but there’s just something that cannot be replicated about the ritual associated with going to the movie theater to see a film. Lucky for us, there are a handful of locales here in the Hamptons that are more than well-equipped to provide top-notch viewing vistas.
Additionally for this weekend, support your local animal shelter with a special event in Southampton, enjoy a chef-made meal at an art center or head to a fundraiser to support the East Hampton Bonackers.
Also, please don’t forget to celebrate your Mom this weekend. Here are a bunch of places offering some stellar dining options across the Hamptons and Shelter Island. It’s the least you can do for the person who brought you into this world.
Bring your pup to a burger bash in Southampton
Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation hosts “Burgers & Dogs” at Union Burger Bar (40 Bowden Square, 631-377-3323) in Southampton tonight. From 4:30 to 7 p.m., all are welcome to enjoy some food and drink, while getting a chance to win raffles and meeting adoptable dogs on the front lawn of the Southampton resto. You’re also welcome to bring your four-legged friend as long as they’re good with other dogs. Tickets are $40 for adults, $25 for kids under 12.

Barnstorm and Bonac love at Clubhouse
The Clubhouse (174 Daniels Road, East Hampton, 631-537-2695) hosts a PTSA fundraiser for the East Hampton School tomorrow, May 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. There’ll be food, a silent auction and live music from Real East End Brass. The event is 21 and older and tickets are $40 in advance, $50 at the door. The Barnstorm, New York City’s premier party rock band, will be at The Room inside Clubhouse this Saturday, May 10, beginning at 10 p.m. Doors open at 9 and tickets are $20 at the door.
Learn about (and how to use) ChatGPT on Shelter Island
Join in for an informative session at the Shelter Island Library (37 North Ferry Road, 631-749-0042) tomorrow night at 6 p.m. to learn how to use ChatGPT for both your business and private life. Taking place via Zoom, this is a great opportunity to learn and better understand how to use the big, bad AI that is without a doubt going to be a permanent fixture in our lives. Celebrate Gary Cooper in Southampton
Screen legend Gary Cooper, a fixture during the Golden Age of Hollywood, will be celebrated (his birthday was May 7) at the Southampton Playhouse (43 Hill St., 631-339-9069) this weekend, starting tomorrow. Dubbed the Gary Cooper Festival, screenings of movies starring the two-time Oscar winner will be shown at the Playhouse. “Ball of Fire” (tomorrow at 7 p.m.), “High Noon” (two screenings on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m.), and “The Pride of the Yankees” (two screenings on Sunday, May 11, at 3 and 6:30 p.m.). Cooper has a lasting connection to Southampton, as he spent cherished time there and where he now rests at Sacred Hearts Cemetery. Tickets are $17 per screening.
Hop to for the HooDoos in Sag Harbor
The HooDoo Loungers will perform at the Masonic Temple (200 Main St., above the Whaling Museum) in Sag Harbor on Saturday at 8 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes and get ready to bring down the house for one of the best dance parties found on the East End. Tickets are $25, get yours here.

Fall into kids fashion fun at CMEE
Bridgehampton’s Children’s Museum of the East End (376 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, 631-537-8250) hosts a Future Fashion Stars Pop-up on Saturday. The first session, designed for ages 5 to 7, is from 9:30 a.m. to noon while the second session will be from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and is for ages 8 to 11. This is a great opportunity for the future fashionistas of the world to build fashion boards while exploring trendy styles, up-cycled designs, sewing and much more. Cost is $95 per person.
Attend a chef curated meal at a local art center
Chef Jason Weiner (co-owner of Almond Restaurant in Bridgehampton) will be featured at the Watermill Center‘s year-round brunch and dinner series “The Artists’ Table,” featuring artist and choreographer Cassiel Gabe, of Dance Reflections Studio. Located at 39 Water Mill Towd Road in Water Mill, the center’s Artists’ Table features a private presentation by international artists, followed by a chef-prepared meal with locally sourced ingredients. A great opportunity to support both the artist and local restaurant community; tickets are $125.

Go to the movies in Sag Harbor
Sag Harbor Cinema (90 Main St., 631-725-0010) hosts a slew of movies for this weekend. Don’t miss “Sinners” opening at the theater tomorrow with the first showing at 2:45 p.m. Also tomorrow, don’t miss the one-week only run of “Un Homme et une Femme,” a 1966 French film directed by Claude Lelouch. Screen times are available here. For the kids, take ’em to see a classic as Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland” screens on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at noon.
All about Ada, the architect, at SAC
Not much is known about Ada Karmi Melamede, one of the most accomplished female architects in the world. This Saturday, Southampton Arts Center (25 Jobs Lane, 631-283-0967) screens “Ada — My Mother The Architect,” a deeply moving portrait of an extraordinary woman directed by her daughter, filmmaker, and former architect, Yael Melamede. A Q&A will follow the film, featuring the mother and daughter duo. Presented in collaboration with Hamptons Doc Fest. Starts at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20, $15 for members.
