The nuts and bolts

3 bedrooms

3 bathrooms

2,300 square feet

1.13 acres

Built 1832

House proud

The home was renovated in 2021 by its owners-interior designers, who kept original details such as decorative cornices around the windows and hardwood plank floors. They also respected the interior bones of the house, preserving vaulted ceilings, alcoves and other nooks and crannies typical of a period home, while modernizing it as a comfortable and refined living space.

“The owner spotted this captain’s house right away and with his artistic eye, opened up the spaces to create a contemporary flow, all the while preserving the integrity of the past,” says Penelope Moore, the Saunders listing agent representing the home.

“The charm of this vintage home lies not only in its 1832 details, but in the thoughtful renovation that honors its original spirit.”

What’s the plan?

The home is entered through a covered porch, opening into a traditional front foyer with a center hallway that adjoins the common rooms. Along one side of the hallway are a formal living room to the front of the home, dining room in the center and the kitchen at the rear overlooking the back veranda. On the other side of the halls is a flexible room, currently used as a library, with a modern wet bar. Upstairs is devoted to bedrooms, which of which is given a different personality based on the formation of roofline. The primary bedroom’s bath features a soaking tub and a custom-designed modern-organic sink. A bonus room can be a study or office.

What’s cooking?

Completely renovated, the kitchen is anchored by a granite-topped custom-designed center island that seats three and includes storage and an integrated Viking microwave. Appliances include a Viking stove, Sub-Zero refrigerator, KitchenAid dishwasher and an under-counter wine fridge. There is an adjacent conversation area/family area in an three-windowed alcove beyond the seated counter.

What else?

This home reflects the design aesthetic of its owners all throughout—from the wall sconces and ceiling light fixtures to the elegant accoutrements in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Agent’s callout

“Each room is bathed in natural sunlight, creating a sense of openness that breathes life into every corner. The interplay between spaces feels effortless, as if the house itself is guiding you along, embracing both its history and the modern touches that now grace its halls,” says Moore. “It’s a rare and comforting layout, where every step through the home feels as natural as the light that pours through the windows.”

Location, location, location
