Whether you’re in the mood for a quick bite or looking to settle in for a farm-to-table meal with the family, Hamptons Standard offers the best of both worlds.
Looking to fill a void in the Hampton Bays culinary scene, chef and owner Salvatore Biundo opened Hamptons Standard in the former Friendly’s on Montauk Highway in June. Hamptons Standard is part grab-and-go market/coffeehouse and part sit-down restaurant with an emphasis on bringing quality, affordable cuisine to the area, explained Biundo, a Southampton resident who also owns traditional Italian restaurant Centro Trattoria and Bar a little farther west on Montauk Highway.
“We wanted something different,” Biundo said. “It was necessary. I wanted fast casual and a restaurant with fresh, affordable food for the masses. We hope to make it a destination in Hampton Bays.”
Open daily, the café serves up a variety of grab-and-go breakfast and lunch options that include freshly made sandwiches and soups plus a build-your-own-salad bar. There are also made-to-order menu items and prepared dinners. The market is also home to For Five Coffee Roasters, a Queens-based coffee company with 25 locations around the country. This is the roaster’s first Suffolk County outpost. In addition to its specialty coffee brews, For Five Coffee serves a variety of teas along with fresh baked pastries and desserts. The stuffed cookies come highly recommended.
“We love what [Biundo] is doing here at Hampton Standard,” said roaster Eric Fernandez. “We wanted to be on the East End and we think the location is great for people to stop in on their way to the beach.”
The sit-down restaurant features a variety of American cuisine, ranging from fresh fish tostada appetizers to a variety of salad, sandwich and burger options. Heartier selections include wood-fired steaks and ribs, and for fans of Centro Trattoria, a selection of Biundo’s specialty Italian dishes, such asricotta gnocchi and pork chop Milanese. Cocktails, craft beer and local wines on tap are also available.
“It’s something that’s going to impact the community on such a positive level by providing locals a spot where they can come with their friends and family have a good meal,” Biundo said. “There is a little something for everyone.”
Biundo purchased the former Friendly’s restaurant space in the spring of 2018, and spent a year transforming it into a modern, yet eclectic space for his 165-seat dining concept. The newly renovated restaurant and market has a decidedly “boho chic” vibe, with white subway tile walls contrasted by metal accents and red booth seating complemented by vintage velvet covered bar stools.
“We tried to make it a fun, exciting place where people could gather,” said Biundo. “It is a clean, casual, modern-American restaurant that is accessible on a daily basis.”
The Market and Five For Coffee Roasters is opened daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The kitchen and bar are open Monday through Thursday starting at 4 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 11:30 a.m.
