About
Join us at 126 N Main St. for an exclusive artist talk & reception featuring the artwork of John Wittenberg.
John Wittenberg Studio is located in Southold, NY. Wittenberg’s work employs a wide range of materials that include stone, steel, wood, graphite, and paper. The work varies from small and intimate, to large site-specific pieces that interact with the environment.
His primary subject has been the interplay of natural forms and their interaction with the landscape. Yet in telling stories of the world around him has been searching for a way to describe the danger we face from our own failure to be guardians of our planet. It is only through working with pulp and paper that Wittenberg has found a material to express visual ideas within a wider social context.
Recent work on monoprints during a residency at The Church in Sag Harbor, NY and work in the community studio at Brooklyn’s Dieu Donne added new emphasis to works in paper and has become a significant part of his visual vocabulary.
Wittenberg has his art training from the Boston Museum School, the University of Vermont and a multi-year-working relationship with internationally known sculptor Paul Aschenbach in Charlotte VT.
