Built in 1966, this stylish house has been thoughtfully renovated in high, yet highly approachable style. It has echoes of Scandinavian design, with a no-fuss streamlined aesthetic, and yet exudes warmth and intimacy, thanks not only to a wood-burning fireplace that anchors the main space, but also the wood finishes throughout the rooms.
The property is co-represented by Chris Kann and Chris Fanning of Corcoran, and Rachel Rushforth-Worrell of Brown Harris Stevens.
“They did everything they were supposed to in a renovation and did it right,” said Kann, noting that the transformation has “been a work in progress over 10 years with constant improvements and thoughtful considerations on what to do next.”
What’s the plan?
The first floor includes a 283-square-foot living room with a ceiling height of nearly 21 and a half feet, which sets the tone for this airy, light-filled home. The primary ensuite bedroom is accessed from one side of the living room, and a second bedroom is tucked in behind the fireplace, near the wrought-iron spiral staircase and a full bathroom. The kitchen and sunroom are on the other side of the house in their own attached pavilion. Up the staircase, a bedroom loft has a romantic garret-like feel to it, and floor-to-ceiling windows in the apex of the A-frame architecture, which verges on 13 feet high. The lower level, with nearly nine-foot ceilings, includes storage, laundry and entry to the one-car garage.
What’s cooking?
The eat-in kitchen is custom design by Henrybuilt, known for holistic made-to-order kitchens crafted to the way a homeowner lives and uses the space. “It’s a natural, beautiful modern kitchen with minimal design that uses a lot of woods for a warm vibe,” says Kann. The appliances are by Fisher & Paykel and the floors are pickled white-oak hardwood, as they are throughout the house.
What else?
Almost all the rooms feature wood-paneled ceilings with either exposed beams or coffers. The bathrooms are outfitted with Carrera marble and fixtures from Restoration Hardware.

One cool thing (or two)
The shower in the primary bedroom extends to the outside through a glass doorway for an open-air experience. Extensive decks at the front and back of the house extend the living space by at least 1,000 square feet, says Fanning, and create “a true, seamless indoor/outdoor flow.”
Agent’s callout
“This enclave is a little neighborhood street, tucked away with fewer than 10 other houses on a cul de sac. It’s a boating community with beaches but can also feel very much like New England – a mix of country and beach,” Kann says.
Location, location, location
Fanning noted that recent developments such as new restaurants and a couple of hotels have directed more attention to Shelter Island, but such development has happened in a controlled way. “You’re surrounded by a lot of options … and there’s more there’s more to do on the island so you can stay here and [yet] still be surrounded by a quiet existence.”
The home is on small side street cul de sac set between St. Mary’s and North Cartwright roads, and less than a mile from the center of town, where the school and public library are located. Also nearby are the Mashomack Preserve with walking trails and diverse habitats, the working Sylvester Manor Educational Farm with a seasonal farmstand and Coecles Harbor
