For Scarlett Rose Mindful Beauty owner Annie Kim, good hair starts at the scalp.
While the Hampton Bays resident has been in the business of providing excellent hair care and beauty services at her East End salon and spa locations — in Sag Harbor and Southampton on the South Fork and in Greenport on the North Fork — collectively for well over a decade, it’s her latest good hair effort, Korean-style head spas, that may have the deepest roots.
Originating in Japan, head spas are known for being luxurious, multi-step hair treatments that utilize deep-cleaning, massage-centric practices that provide rejuvenation and relaxation for the scalp, while simultaneously nourishing and detoxifying the hair for optimal health and growth. And with Kim’s Head Spa K, the first of its kind on the East End of Long Island, ancient techniques are combined with cutting-edge scalp therapies to prevent hair loss and promote optimal scalp health.

Her state-of-the-art Head Spa K opened first in Greenport in December of 2024, then Southampton shortly after, with Sag Harbor’s location gaining a new head spa space about a year ago.
Whether clients are battling hair loss or simply seeking a moment of relaxation, Kim’s carefully curated head spa treatment menu offers something for everyone. Of the several different types of customizable treatments are offered, including a scalp detox, hair thinning and loss treatment, relaxation head spa and hair, scalp balance treatment and red light therapy, prices range from $95 to $220 and service times range from 30 minutes to about two hours.
“It’s basically a facial for the scalp,” she says. “When I went to South Korea to learn how to be a head spa coordinator, I thought, ‘everybody loves getting their head massaged during the shampoo part of getting their hair done.’ For the clients, that’s probably what’s most enjoyable, so I thought of trying to provide them with a relaxing treatment that also has big benefits.”
For Kim, it was important to blend the Japanese-style mind-body wellness technique with the restorative and clinically functional Korean-style head spa practice, while also using Korea’s advanced dermatological skincare and clinical-grade haircare products and tools. Typical issues that are identified and addressed include dandruff, oiliness and buildup, while treatments aim to reduce inflammation and itchiness. Additionally, Korean-style head spas help to support root strength and balance scalp microbiome.

Depending on the initial consultation (which is free), services start with the massaging of the head, shoulder and neck, before special products to do scaling of the scalp. After the scaling, we using the steamer to explore exfoliating the scalp gently, just like a facial, to open up the pores, then double cleansing and shampooing.
“There’s still a lot of education we have to do with the clients, because they’re just kind of curious about this,” Kim says. “And I’d say about 30% of the clients, they have scalp issues. They are really concerned about their hair thinning and hair loss, and then more than 50% that are just curious.”
