Last week, it was announced that Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio (located at 159 Old Point Road, Southampton) received a grant from the Milwaukee-based philanthropic arts organization, the Ruth Foundation for the Arts.

As part of this national cohort of 169 organizations, Ma’s House will receive $150,000 in unrestricted support over three years, helping to sustain their mission of supporting Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) artists, residencies, and community-centered programming on Shinnecock land. Slated to offer critical stability and space for long-term visioning and growth, $150,000 will be disbursed to the nonprofit over the course of three years. In total, $25.35 million was awarded nationwide.

“While the specific application questions change each cycle, the program always encourages deep self-reflection,” saYS Zola Yi, Senior Grants Manager. “Insights from the readers — esteemed peers from across the field — allow us to better understand the priorities of the arts ecosystem as a whole.”

According to a press release from Ruth Arts, core grants were introduced in 2022 and are an application-based program open to prior artist choice award recipients. Applications are reviewed by a rotating group of readers representing diverse disciplines and regions. Each cycle is framed by a theme designed to encourage collaboration and institutional reflection.

“Ma’s House is named after my grandmother, and that sense of family has always guided the project,” says Ma’s House executive director Jeremy Dennis. “This new chapter allows us to honor that legacy while expanding what’s possible for Indigenous-led cultural spaces today.”
