Movie theaters are having a bit of a renaissance.

When the COVID-19 pandemic put a palpable pause on life, movie theater-going was one of the first casualties, but this is the year that all that seems to be turning around.

“The movie theater landscape in 2025 is demonstrating a remarkable turnaround as audiences rediscover the joys of the cinema experience,” says an August article from Beverly Boy Productions. “Attendance rates are bouncing back, with global box office earnings gradually closing in on pre-pandemic levels. While streaming services retain their significant influence, more moviegoers are eager to enjoy blockbuster releases in a unique communal setting—a sensation that’s difficult to replicate at home. The big screen offers more than just enhanced visuals and sound; it provides a social event, merging entertainment with collective excitement. As a result, both seasoned fans and new audiences are prioritizing theater outings for highly anticipated films.”

One thing that hasn’t bounce back is the price of going to the movies, with most tickets costing around $20 per person, and that’s well before you even think about hitting the snack bar. Luckily, here in the Hamptons there are a couple of spots that are offering some affordable promotions in the near future:

“Monday Mystery Movie” continues at Southampton Playhouse (43 Hill St., Southampton, 631-339-9069), next Monday, Oct. 20. As an extra special feature, the movie night will honor the late, great Diane Keaton, as an unknown movie will screen starring the beloved actress and fashion icon. Starts at 7 p.m. and costs $5 per person. Buy your tickets in advance, here. Additionally, on Tuesdays, the Playhouse is offering all movie tickets for $10 per person for first-run features (including senior and disability pricing) for all paid members, Southampton Village Discount Card holders, active military, veterans and Southampton Village First Responders (with valid ID). This offer does not apply to IMAX, repertory screenings, advance previews, fan events, special engagements, or premium formats unless otherwise stated. The Tuesday promotion will continue through the winter, ending in April of next year.

A little further west, Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center (76 Main Street, Westhampton Beach, 631-288-1500) invites movie lovers to an exclusive “Secret Cinema” event on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. The mystery-charged experience sees cinema goers enjoying an afternoon of suspense for just $5 per person. The title is revealed only when the film begins to play. According to a press statement from WHBPAC, the film is rated R and is not suitable for children.

“We wanted to create something playful and affordable that reminds people why seeing a movie together is special,” said Allison Frost, director of sales and volunteer services. “Secret Cinema gives audiences a $5 ticket, a few hints, and the thrill of discovery — all while strengthening the sense of community that defines the WHBPAC.”
