Aw, you know, everyone makes such a big to-do about Labor Day Weekend, but for our money it’s the weekend before that’s got the summer vibes on sunny steroids. Maybe it’s because we know the days are getting a little bit shorter, or that you’ve still got a whole bunch of things you want to do on your East End warm-weather check list. So get and check ’em off — and if you’re feeling all deer in headlights about it (which, public service announcement: Ease off on that pedal around sundown because, boy, have there been a whole lot of sweet but not really smart baby deer dashing across the roads these days) see the ideas we’ve got for you below. You know we’d never leave you hanging.

Hit up Shelter Island’s annual artisan market — and a pop-up fashion fête, too!
No pre-fab, factory churned items here. All crafts and art at the Shelter Island Chamber of Commerce 61st Annual Arts Show & Craft Fair (33 N. Ferry Road, Shelter Island) must be artisan-made. Get a jump on holiday shopping (or, hey, gifts for yourself) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Shelter Island School.
If you’re still jonesing for more jewelry and clothes, it’s your lucky weekend. The 4th Annual Brands Collective clothing and jewelry sale will be all weekend long (17 Stearns Point Road in the barn to the right of the driveway). This year, Hiywet Mimi Girma is back with her pan African textile-inspired prints and flowy, fashion-forward natural-fiber dresses and pieces under her label Yesaet, along with the up-your-everyday-style of Áwet, Gwen Beloti‘s beautiful jewelry (the kind of things you want to wear all the time, they’re so pretty) and the intricate beaded pieces and accessories of Moio. If you’re still feeling the joy of a great shopping score, stick around for the West African “Dance with Ousmane” glass starting at 5 p.m. Reservations recommended for the latter; RSVP to [email protected].
Get ready to salsa at Sylvester Manor
We are big fans of the creekside concerts at Shelter Island’s historic Sylvester Manor. This year, prepare to loosen up those dance moves to the Latin sounds of Brooklyn’s Los Hacheros, whose classic Latin music sounds will be the best kind of soundtrack to the sinking summer sun. Bring a picnic basket (and your dancing feet!) for this end-of-summer soirée. Gates open at 4 p.m.; music starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $40 (kids under nine are free!) — grab yours here.
