June 8 is World Oceans Day, an international collaborative effort observed by all United Nations member states that supports and fosters public interest in protecting the ocean, which (fun fact) covers 70% of the planet.

Since the UN designated June 8 as World Oceans Day back in 2008, each year there has been a theme corresponding with the event to further help with raising awareness the dangers Earth’s oceans continue to face.

Here in the Hamptons, this past Memorial Day weekend, Marram Montauk (21 Oceanview Terrace, 631-668-2050) a 96-room resort situated directly on the ocean, launched it’s own marine program in collaboration with Swarovski Optik, a division of the world renowned Swarovski Group (the very same one that also produces crystal glass, jewelry and rhinestones), specializing in optical instruments, predominantly telescopes and binoculars.

“Marram’s deep reverence for nature takes center stage in its new educational marine program,” the resort’s website says, “which allows guests to observe Montauk’s coastal ecosystem with unparalleled clarity… through the end of the season.”

With cutting-edge binoculars on loan from the, along with Swarovski’s stationary ST Vista scope (a Cadillac model, as far as spotting scope ranges go), guests of the luxury resort will be able to spot seabirds, seals and (hopefully) migrating whales.

The waterfront hotel has also partnered with New York-based biological oceanographer and marine conservation specialist Ryan Mahoney, to lead regular sessions teaching guests about local marine life, according to a statement from the resort. Mahoney will provide guests with a comprehensive guide to local wildlife and will also be available for private excursion bookings that include whale watching sessions and marine biology lessons on the Atlantic Ocean’s ecosystems.
