If lately, you’re finding some of the local yoga offerings too hot, too fast, too extreme or just too … un-yoga-ish, the new pop-up studio Yoga Collective (97a Old Riverhead Road, Westhampton Beach), might just be your new om away from home.
Operating out of Studio Moodo, the new yoga and martial arts spot has been holding classes in the space since their soft opening in October. Studio owner John Kim cites his own wellness journey as inspiration for the new addition.
“Martial arts and yoga go hand in hand, they complement each other very well. I was 100% a martial arts person until I moved out to Westhampton Beach. One of my goals was to increase my flexibility and mobility. I attended my first yoga class and the rest of history. I’ve done over 600 classes in two years.”

He decided to create a brand for the yoga program to keep its identity separate. The team chose “collective” as part of the name to evoke a sense of community. Classes are held at different times from the martial arts classes and have their own flow. There is also a Sunday yoga class exclusively for children.
Participants can choose a package of classes or pay a monthly unlimited membership, which allows them to attend as often as they want. The yoga is more traditional, taking place at room temperature and without the addition of other disciplines such as barre or Pilates. This helps people who may be new to yoga or in more fragile health participate.
Kim has selected the instructors for their commitment to this pared down vision. “I said, ‘Listen, this is my vision with our yoga program. Would you like to get involved and help me grow this?’” he says. “Now we have six incredible instructors that come here and teach all levels, from beginner to advanced, and it’s purely 100% authentic yoga.”
Outside of the yoga program, Yoga Collective is offering sound baths with both musical bowls and gong. They also have an established relationship with AHRC Suffolk, helping disabled people find the benefits of yoga as well.
Kim credits his yoga practice with his own better health, both physically and mentally. “It’s improved my overall well-being, in terms of my flexibility, mobility, my mental health, my breath work…overall, it’s been an incredible experience.”
