Just because the summer season is ending this weekend doesn’t mean that life on the South Fork stops. Sure, there’s been a palpable shift, both in the weather and the all-around feel of the East End, but there’s still nearly the same amount of really cool stuff to see and do — only this time you’ll probably actually go since the thought of leaving your house isn’t such a pain in the you know what and the traffic won’t be the stuff nightmares are made of.

Autumn is a welcome reprieve from the marathon-like summertime shimmy shake most locals and visitors have been doing for the past four months, so, as the Equinox moves in, instead of mourning the ending of summer instead celebrate the start of the fall. We promise, she’s equal the fun with half the headache.

Here’s a little taste of what’s going on this weekend to get after the official season shift in style.

Support Ma’s House

The Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio annual fundraiser is today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Canoe Place Inn in Hamptons Bays.  Celebrated members of the East End community will be assemblyman Fred Thiele, Lisa Goree, chair of the Shinnecock Nation tribal council and Southampton town accessor, and Anthony Madonna, Guild Hall’s director of learning and new works. Attendees can also enjoy musical performances by Matt Hunter, Thunderbird Sisters and Jeffrey Pegram. There’ll be a silent auction featuring artwork by BIPOC artists, experiences at Foxwoods and much more. Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $150 per person ($50 for Shinnecock Tribe members).

A rock opera, led by East Hampton’s own Dan Koontz, is at LTV. (Photo credit: Phil Merrit)

Hear a rock opera at LTV

An encore concert staging of “The Free Life” by local songwriter and performer Dan Koontz is at LTV Studios in Wainscott Saturday, September 21. Free Life was the name of the Rozière balloon that made the fourth attempt at crossing the Atlantic on September 20 back in 1970, launching from East Hampton. The thing of it is, the giant balloon went down in a storm off the coast of Newfoundland and the adventurers (husband and wife duo Rodney Anderson and Pamela Brown, along with pilot Malcolm Brighton) were never found. Tomorrow’s performance, a new style rock opera, at LTV is inspired by this historical event. Tickets are $25 in advanced, $30 at the door and the show starts at 7 p.m. Grab yours here.

Learn how to protect your money and your loved ones

“The Role of Trustee and Executor” is tonight from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Hampton Bays Public Library. Britt Burner, Esq., partner at Burner Prudenti Law, P.C., will discuss the important roles of estate planning while exploring the responsibilities of both the administrator of an estate and the executor of a will. This is a great way to understand the specific steps, roles and outcomes of what can be a pretty messy and/or complicated situation.
