Since its inception back in 1990, Amagansett’s Quail Hill Farm has been a farm built by the people for the people. Keeping the history and heritage of East End farming alive and well, Quail Hill grows upward of 60 different types of crops and feeds at least 250 families each year with its legendary community supported agriculture program. Here, Hannah Selinger’s story highlights the initial efforts of the people that helped build Quail Hill to what it is today, particularly local author and original farm director Scott Chaskey as well as current farm director Layton Guenther.
“I remember I was at a conference where a fellow I very much respected who was a farm activist in the Midwest and deeply involved in policymaking in Washington, D.C. I was listening to him talking to a group of CSA farmers,” Chaskey says. “He used the word ‘purpose’ and that really stuck with me. The work at Quail Hill has great purpose — and that’s a lovely thing.”
