House proud
Built in 1958 by noted East Hampton architect Alfred Scheffer for his client, the Bishop Austin Pardue, this home on Hook Pond is a local landmark, well preserved by having only two owners in its life. The Sotheby’s International Realty listing represents only the third time the house will change hands: the last owners were in residence for 55 years. Liz Carey and Valerie Smith are co-representing the transaction.
“The word that come to mind when being in the space is romance,” says Smith. “The moment you walk in, you are captivated, and there is no other view like it in East Hampton. The home, at the end of a private lane, overlooks Hook Pond, extends across the Maidstone Golf Club and beyond to the ocean.
“It’s a forever view,” says Carey. “It could be the longest open view in East Hampton village.”
What’s the plan?
The house features a grand entrance into a great room, with double-height ceilings, barn timbers more than 200 years old, and a brick fireplace that both anchors the space and sets a tone for the home’s chic-rustic ambience.
A wing to the left of the entry foyer includes the primary common areas. The living and dining room (924 square feet combined) open onto a 1,100-square-foot patio. The living room’s wood-burning fireplace is flanked by built-in shelves, and the rest of the room features a wall of paned glass overlooking the pond, exposed beams and wood paneling—think eco-chic-lodge vibe. A hallway provides separation from the great room to a library/study, a primary bedroom and bath, another patio and the kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is another bedroom and full bath, and access to a small porch.
The second owners built a two-story “children’s wing” that is accessed from the right side of the foyer and features three bedrooms and a flexible room on the first level, and a spiral staircase leading to the second floor with another bedroom and full bath, and access to a private roof terrace.

What’s cooking?
The 282-square-foot eat-in kitchen repeats the vaulted ceiling and antique wood beams theme. Here, reclaimed wood cabinetry provides a seamless visual link to the rough-hewn wood paneling, a cork floor and pond views.
What else?
The home features numerous built-in—bookcases, bedroom storage and window seats. There is a total of 1,456 square feet of patio space. There is a separate outbuilding that Bishop Pardue, author of several books, used as a writing studio.

One cool thing (or two)
Scheffer was known locally for his unpretentious, often rustic but understated elegant cottage designs. Common to his designs is the blueprint for creating warm, lived-in spaces. When he died 1976, the architect was eulogized as the “dean of East Hampton’s architects,” having designed more than 100 houses and public buildings on the East End
Agent’s callout
“There are no houses in the long view and never will be,” says Carey, making the property “unique and beautiful” in perpetuity.
Location, location, location
The home is 1.2 miles from East Hampton village; 1.4 miles from East Hampton Village Nature Trail and Wildlife Sanctuary and near Maidstone Golf Club, Egypt and Wiborg and East Hampton Main beaches.
