When children receive their first library card they are often told it holds the key to numerous adventures, found in the pages of the books they will read. Today, that concept can be taken in a more literal sense.

A library card entitles cardholders to a lot of no-cost perks that go far beyond reading.

A library card obtained in either Nassau or Suffolk county grants free access to a number of Long Island and New York City museums. It is a golden ticket for the curious, from couples looking to take in the arts at MoMA in Manhattan to families hoping to spend a fun afternoon learning more about the environment at The South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center in Bridgehampton.

Participating museums often include the top cultural destinations such as The Frick, The Guggenheim, The Intrepid and The Vanderbuilt Museum; though it is important to point out that each local library has different offerings and rules for obtaining the museum passes.

In all cases, your local library will provide a physical member card to your museum of choice that you must take with you along with your library card to get inside.

In addition to free museum passes, library cards can also be used to get discounted tickets to area amusements as well as free audiobooks, classes and lectures across the island.
