Summer might be over soon, but many East End farm stands remain open through the fall.
There’s still plenty of great fresh food available at the Sylvester Manor Farmstand, which remains open Fridays through Sundays and features a wide array of organics.
You’ll find zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, turnips, eggplants, radishes, leafy greens, okra and even some winter squash — from- butternut to the more exotic delicata that has a sweet and nutty flavor. But be advised the delicata doesn’t store as well as some of the others, so you’ll want to buy it and cook it soon.
There are items you might not recognize — red carrots, for instance. Inside, they look like the orange carrots we all know, but outside, the skin is a purplish red.
There’s plenty of kale, both Tuscan and Red Russian, collards and chard.
The farmstand also features cut flowers and shortly, pumpkins will be plentiful there.
Farmstand hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visit the farm stand at 80 North Ferry Road on Shelter Island.
