Kyle’s on Shelter Island is trying something new this summer. Weekend evenings, Kyle’s will be open for dinner. This new venture is the result of husband and wife team Fritz Beckmann and Allison Katz, who are excited to be joining the Shelter Island community. The couple has entertained the idea of a restaurant business on the East End for some time now, and says this opportunity came “at the perfect time.”
The casual, 45-seat restaurant will be open Thursday through Sunday from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Dinner at Kyle’s will include a variety of reasonably-priced dishes featuring local ingredients. House specials include fresh ricotta cheese, pastas and paté, as well as homemade sausages. The menu, though not extensive, highlights the couple’s culinary experience and passion for food, travel and the East End. And they’re always coming up with something new. “We’re changing up the menu items as we go, to reflect what’s local, fresh and in season,” Chef Beckmann said.
Chef Fritz Beckmann has more than 25 years of experience creating and preparing inventive cuisine, as well as working at and managing some of New York City’s biggest restaurants. Chef Allison Katz started her career in the garment industry, but decided to follow her passion for food. She worked at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, cross testing recipes while gaining restaurant experience at the Central Bark Boathouse. Eager to learn more about desserts, she worked for Abigail Kirsch’s Pier 60 and The Lighthouse.
In addition to Dinner at Kyle’s, Allison will be selling her baked goods at the Shelter Island Farmers’ Market Saturday mornings throughout the summer. Ali Katz Small Batch Baking offers traditional favorites: cookies, breads, and other treats made from quality ingredients.
Though the restaurant will only be open for dinner through Labor Day, Chef Katz has high hopes for the future. “This is definitely a challenge for us, but so far so good. We love the East End. We’re thinking about making a move out here, so we’ll see where this summer leads us.”
